A great way to save money while decorating is to repurpose your existing furniture. This is a dresser that I refinished in order to better match the other furniture in my room. There are some variations as to how you can refinish a dresser, but here are the steps that I took:
1. Sand: Because of the primer that I used, I did not fully scratch off the old stain but rather scratched up the dresser a bit with a piece of sandpaper.
2. Prime: I used Behr interior paint and primer which is great, because as I mentioned in step one, you do not have to sand very much, which can be the most time consuming step. You also save time with a paint/primer all in one because you do not need to paint as many coats as you would were these two separate. In order to prime the dresser, I used a smaller foam roller, which is amazing for creating an even finish.
3. Paint: After the primer is dry, paint your dresser with a hi-gloss paint in the same way that you did the primer. Use a new roller and you will more than likely need two coats.
4. Hardware: After the paint is dry, you can then add hardware if you choose. This dresser did not previously have drawer knobs, so I had to add holes for them. For this step, you will need a drill or electric screwdriver with interchangable drill bits that are the same size as the screws in the drawer knobs. I used the interior side of the drawer to measure the placement of the knobs. After marking the inside for knob placement, drill a hole where you have made your marks. This step is surprisingly easy. Just make sure that you have your drawer on a sturdy surface. I used the workbench in my garage and placed the drawer vertically, hanging partially off the workbench surface, with the side I drilled through facing down. I then drilled a hole on the side positioned to hang off the workbench and after, flipped the drawer to drill the second hole. As far as hardware goes, I found these drawer knobs at Target, where there are many cute options. I’ve also always had an obsession with the knobs available at Anthropologie.
Let me know if you have any questions. Happy Tuesday everyone!
