When the kimono trend first became popular, I was a little skeptical. Not because I didn’t think them totally adorable but because I thought of them as being more suitable for a bohemian look. While I love the boho trend, as I’ve talked about in previous posts, and had so much fun experimenting with it for Coachella this year, it is not really my every day style. My best friend was ALL about kimonos when they first started popping up in stores, which made me start to reconsider. How could I work kimonos into my daily outfits? Through trying on a variety of options, I definitely figured out a few things to be aware of when it comes to the kimono jacket.
If you’re like me and a little apprehensive initially about this trend, opt for a solid color like the one pictured in this post, opposed to a loud print. This is the first kimono that I bought because I wasn’t liking the look of printed kimonos mixed with other prints. Something about the flowiness of the kimono fabric makes the whole outfit seem a bit overdone when too many prints are involved. I also like this more neutral option for work, as it works well as an alternative to a cardigan or blazer. I now own some printed kimonos too because I love florals, but when wearing them I do stick to a solid colored top.
The kimono can be a little tricky to style with its boxier shape. There are a number of different length options and keep in mind that the longer the length, the more that you are covering up your figure. If you’re not a fan of the boxy frame of kimonos, try belting it! A skinny belt at the waist takes away some of that bulk and gives you more of a silhouette. I personally prefer kimonos paired with a more tailored pair of bottoms to balance the oversized kimono shape. Shorts are a great option too to give a similar balancing effect!
As far as wearing kimonos throughout the seasons, there are a wide variety of options from lightweight for the warmer months to knits for the winter. Still not down with the kimono for your daily outfits? How about as a swimsuit cover-up at the beach? This is the perfect place to bust out those bright floral prints!
How do you like to wear kimonos? Thank you so much for stopping by!
