I LOVE the look of a sweater layered over a button-up top! Surprisingly, there are a variety of ways to style this look to make the combination unique. This is a great opportunity to experiment with mixing prints, as I did here. The smaller print looks best underneath, as it is the one just peaking out through your collar, cuff and tail of your shirt.
As far as colors go, pairing two different colors in your shirt and knit is fun because this creates a color blocking effect. Opposite of that, another option is to keep the color scheme monochromatic (just one color) within the two pieces but instead play with texture. For example, try combining a chunky cable knit sweater over a sheer, lightweight button-up blouse. I think that this creates a particularly modern look.
Other ideas include pairing a structured collared shirt with a cutesy sweater for a more feminine and playful look. A button-up cardigan that is buttoned all the way is another way to achieve the layered effect as well. This also gives you a more versatile piece that is not as limited in ways that it can be styled.
Wishing you all a happy Saturday!
