Polka dots and stripes are some of my most favorite prints because they can be easily mixed with other patterns. One important rule to using different prints within one outfit is repeating at least one color in each piece. Because both of the prints in this outfit are more structured, the overall look is on the preppy side. However, I also love the combination of one structured print with another that is less so (think not so repetitive, like swirly flowers or an abstract design). Another good rule of thumb is incorporating different scales, for example, one piece that has a larger pattern and another with a smaller one.
A great way to play with mixing prints is by starting small. Try a patterned scarf or shoes, both of which can be easily tossed off if you don’t like the look of them paired with your larger patterned piece. Or more and more common are articles of clothing that already have a mix of patterns within them, which is a great way to look for ideas!
